Introduction


Windows phones (phones running Windows Mobile or Windows CE-based OS) have the common UI shared with most PCs, thus a Windows phone owner does not have to spend much extra time in getting herself familar whith how the phone works. In contrary, she has to do that with a non-Windows smart phone, such as Android/Blackberry/iPhone or even a Nokia smart phone. A smart phone is definitely more complicated than a feature phone and takes more time for a layman to master its usage. Remember the learning curve when we first fell in love with Linux or even Windows 95? In this respect, a Windows phone has inherent advantages over a phone of other brands.

However, strangely enough, none of the current Windows phones (at least till Windows Mobile 6.5) has built in the capability of reboot as in desktop windows.

If you want to reboot, to be more accurate, soft reset, your device running Windows Mobile, then it becomes really ugly. You have to first long press the power button, and confirm the MessageBox as follows:



So you actually have to turn off the device first. Then after a while, you press the power button again to reboot (hard reset here) the device. Very inconvenient, isn't it?

Usage and Use


DAAV's Windows Phone Reboot Toolkit is developed to deal with this inconvenience. After installation, we could find the "Reboot" icon in the "Programs" folder. After running once the program, we could also find its shortcut in the "Start" menu. The illustration here is snapshots of a phone running Windows Mobile 6 Professional (aka PocketPC) Simplified Chinese version. Examples of English Windows phone running Windows Mobile 6 Standard (aka SmartPhone) can be found in the next section.



After clicking either the icon in the "Program" folder, or the shortcut in the "Start" menu, you are prompted for confirmation to soft reset the device:



By simply acknowledging "Yes" you handily reboot your Windows phone, avoiding the hassle to first power off then power on.

More Details About Windows Phones Running SmartPhone


A SmartPhone Windows phone does not extensively support drag-down menus and screen scroll-up or scroll-down, as the phone does not have a touch screen that you can click on with a touch pen. The home screen of a phone running Windows Mobile 6 English is typically as follows:



Pressing the "Start" soft-key leads you to a screen full of a fixed number of icons. You don't yet find our installed "Reboot" icon right now since the screen could not hold more icons all at once.



Press "More", here you are the "Reboot" icon:



Run it, and since our program identifies automatically it is on an English Windows phone, information is also shown in English now.



Also, you can find the "Reboot" icon in the shortcut tray on the home screen afterwards:



Thus this program helps a user to handily soft reset a Windows phone, no matter it is a PocketPC or SmartPhone, it is a Chinese version or English version.
